It is subdivided into Mortola Inferiore and Mortola Superiore. The famous Hanbury gardens which have been part of the world cultural heritage since 2006, and which impress both botanists and laymen alike with their beauty, are found in Mortola Inferiore. A narrow path which was already being used by the ligurian fishermen in earlier times leads past the Hanburry gardens down up to the sea. But even the path leading upwards to the village church, which is decorated with lovely mosaic paintings, is worth your while, not least because of the magnificent view, which you can enjoy while at the Piazza San Mauro.
If you follow the winding mountain road further, you will come to Mortola Superiore, where there is a Church of Our Lady with a Madonna statue under open skies. One can cast one’s view over the Ligurian Mountains and let one’s spirit sway in the Taverna di Cippo over a glass of wine.
