Tellaro is located just a few kilometers away from Lerici in the „Golfo dei Poeti“ (Gulf of the Poets). This small romantic village was built during the Middle Age and some buildings are still from origin.
You can park on the parking place in the beginning of the town next to the bus stop. From there keep walking along the street into the town center where you will see on the left the church Stella Maris. The people from the village say that the first stone was laid in 1938 and that the church opened 2 years after. Behind the main altar, you will see three stained glass windows representing San Giorgio (patron saint of Tellaro) and the dragon, San Sebastiano and San Rocco.
Afterwards you can just keep walking into the street, to the piazza Figoli, and enjoy a glass of wine in the Ristorante Il Figoli. The owners will be happy to tell you more about the village and if you are lucky, you may even meet Mario which is the perfect guide for Tellaro. He is working at the Tourist Information which you can find in the steet when you walk down from the piazza, in the direction of the sea on the right side.
Down this street, you will also have a nice panorama sea view and take a look at the second church of Tellaro, the 500-year San Giorgio church. On the left, take a look at the Via San Giorgio, a street between 2 walls, which was one of the main street of the medieval burg and still symbolises the victory over the conquerors. From the windows over the street, the inhabitants were throwing boiling oil on the pirates to prevent them to enter the village.
On the left side along the church, there is a small street going up into the center of the old Tellaro. In this street, you will feel the medieval atmosphere while walking along those typical italian houses. You will then arrive at the third church of Tellaro, the oldest one, the Oratorio di Santa Maria in Selàa. From there, you should really take the time to admire the view and take some photos.
When going back to the piazza, stop at the Alimentari "La Bottega del Borgo" from Chef Marco. Try the olives, the pesto and the home-made pasta : the Troffe from Liguria or the Croxetti, his own creation.
Walking back to the piazza Figoli, there is a street "Via Matteotti" on the right side in front of the Ristorante Il Figoli (opposite direction of the tourist information). If you take this street, you will arrive on some romantic stony beaches (20 minutes of walk). A little swim could be idealistic to end up the visit of the beautiful and unique Tellaro.
